Day 1

We spent the morning putting the last of the cold food and Ken's clothes in the camper. We left Shiloh around 10:30 this morning and headed west toward Frederick and Harper's Ferry and then on to I-81 through VA. The views along the Shenandoah (I-81 parallels the Skyline Drive) are beautiful, but there were a lot of trucks on the interstate. We ate a quick lunch at a rest stop near New Market, VA and then got back on the interstate. We drove for a few hours and then decided to take a detour from Christiansburg over the mountains to Floyd and then onto the Blue Ridge Parkway. We are camping tonight near the Meadows of Dan; tomorrow, we will make our way back to the interstate, but this has been a nice diversion.
Floyd, VA is an interesting town. Floyd is only 6 miles from the Blue Ridge Parkway and boasts that "Floyd County must have more creative talent per capita than any other place in Virginia." There were a number of craft shops, including a number of potteries and a wonderful, old-fashioned hardware store with the best collection of canning supplies I have ever seen outside of the Vermont Country Store! Unfortunately, we arrived at 5 PM, just when most shops were closing. It is definitely worth visiting again.

Here are some images from the Blue Ridge Parkway:

And here is the truck in our spot at the Meadows of Dan Campground, right off the Blue Ridge Parkway. I have miraculously found a wireless connection, so that's how I am posting to the blog. There is thunder rumbling in the distance, so we might be getting a storm. Ken just put on his jacket; there is a lovely breeze blowing. We may not need the fan tonight!

Tomorrow we continue to head south, through Tennessee toward Alabama.
