Day 5 Continued
Meg drove us around Houston, looking at different neighborhoods and areas. We drove through Kinkaid School, where Larry Kahn is the Director of Academic Computing and past Chapelwood United Methodist Church where Jared's dad isSenoir Pastor. I took a few shots of one of Houston's Historic Districts and of the church (if you look closely, you can see Jared's dad's name on the sign), but not of the school. We had lunch at a French Cafe called "Madeleine's."
When we got back to Misty Meadow Lane, Jared was giving Shiloh a bath. She is a very cute puppy.
Meg and I made homemade ice cream in her new Cuisinart ice cream maker--cookies and cream and peppermint pattie!

We had dinner at the Taste of Texas Restaurant, a renowned Texas steak house. We each ordered a 16 oz. New York Strip Steak, which was way more than we could eat. Barbara and Kevin ate here when they were in Houston. Here are a few pictures of our evening out:

Days 3, 4 and 5
It's been a few days since I have had access to the Internet so I have a lot of catching up to do. We are now in Houston, staying with Meg and Jared on Misty Meadow Lane.
We left Alabama and spent a long day driving through Mississippi and part of Louisiana to New Orleans, where we spent the night. As we drove along route I-10, over Lake Pontchartrain we were awed by the amount of devastation--block after block of empty houses, with blue plastic on the roofs and boarded up windows. It was very depressing. Our camp ground was west of the city and we intended to drive back to visit the French Quarter, but when we arrived at the campground we were too tired and hot to drive back into the city. We may regret not visiting New Orleans, but we both felt the same way. Our campground in New Orleans, a KOA, was the worst we have experienced. They gave us a spot on a "field" next to the dumpster. The KOA was in a residential area west of New Orleans, near Rivertown on the Mississippi River, in the flight path of the New Orleans airport. People came and dumped their trash in the dumpster all night and someone's dog barked continuously into the wee hours. We slept fitfully and got up early and left. Rather than backtracking to New Orleans, we decided to kept going toward Houston. We drove along route I-10, over marshes and bayou's, through Baton Rouge and Lafayette and Lake Charles, Louisiana and into Texas. We stopped at the Texas Welcome Center, which is built over a marsh. Then we drove the rest of the way into Houston, arriving around 3 in the afternoon.
We unpacked the food and some clothes from the van and Meg gave us a tour of their condo. Following a typical afternoon thunderstorm, we went to Sandy's for dinner. Sandy's is a combination grocery store, health food store, entertainment spot and restaurant. All the food is fresh and organic and was really good.
Today is Sunday and Meg made a wonderful breakfast of waffle sticks and fruit salad. Thanks, Chris and April, for the waffle iron!
We are going on a driving tour of Houston later this morning.
