Day 8
It's raining in Houston this morning. Ken and I are going to head southwest toward San Antonio (Remember the Alamo, River Walk and the Mission Trail), then toward Fredericksburg (settled by German immigrants in the 1840's) in the Hill Country. We will head back tomorrow by way of Austin (the Texas state capital) and College Station (home of Texas A & M where Meg will be teaching in the fall). Tomorrow night we will be having dinner with Meg, Jared, Jim and Susan Jackson to celebrate my birthday. On Friday we might try again to head to Galveston and on Saturday we will begin our trip back to Hampstead. Don't know if I will have Internet access later tonight, so I will take lots of pictures of our Texas adventure and post them when I can.
We left a very wet and soggy Houston, with some flooding in the streets of Meg and Jared's neighborhood and drove west on I-10 to San Antonio. It continued to rain for most of the trip, but the skies cleared when we reached San Antonio. We found our way downtown and toured the Alamo, which is right in the center of downtown San Antonio (the NECC Conference will be held in San Antonio in 2008). The Alamo was interesting, but very touristy. We then found our way to the Mission Trail and saw 2 of 4 Spanish Missions, built in the 1700's, that are now managed by the US Park Service. You will see photos of them below.
We then drove back to downtown San Antonio for dinner along the famous River Walk. The waitress kindly took our photo.
After dinner, we drove about an hour and a half northwest into the Hill Country. We are staying at a KOA (with wireless access) in Fredericksburg, Texas. Tomorrow, we will visit Fredericksburg and then head back east toward Johnson City (LBJ Country), Austin, College Station and back to Houston. At least this way, we are seeing a bit of the country side. Jared is right, the landscape changes dramatically when you drive an hour or so in any direction.
Here are the photos.
